1st mitten done with terrible gauge. 2nd mitten started (double cuff finished, ie. finished the diamond patterns between the light purple purl rows) that has the right gauge.

If I complete the pair within the time limit is it still a gold medal?

I think it's still a gold. It's like downgrading from a triple jump in figure skating to a double. It's not quite what was planned but still good. Thanks for the thought of "chicken" soup :)
